Coming to America

Mér finnst ég mjög oft eiga sömu samræðurnar þegar fólk fréttir að ég sé frá Íslandi. Þessi samtalsbrot áttu sér til dæmi öll stað í gær:

Maður í strætóskyli: So you from Iceland? That’s so great! I heard it’s beautiful. It’s very isolated though.
Ég: Well, it used to be but not really anymore…
Maður: Yes, it’s really isolated; I read it in a magazine!
Ég: Hmmm, well today since the airlines are flying every day…
Maður: So you come from an isolated country. Is it really cold?

Kona á námskeiði í Stevens: You are from Europe? That is so nice! Why do you want to live in the US though? Europeans hate Americans!
Ég: Hmmm… well, not all Europeans hate..
Kona: Yes, my friend was in Europe and told me that all Europeans hate Americans because they all hate Bush!… *hik*
….well, we hate him too of course, but Europeans hate him much more!
Ég: *hik* Well, in Iceland…
Kona: So is Iceland really cold?

Ég: No, it’s not really colder than New York in the winter. It’s more windy and rainy.
Kona: Windy and rainy? Seriously?! I thought it was all covered with snow all year long. Iceland is really beautiful. I’m sure you must play in the hot springs a lot. So, it’s really cold?
Ég: No, not really. It’s more windy and rainy….
Kona: Interesting! I didn’t know it rained there. They never show that in the television show.
Ég: Hmmm.. Television show?
Kona: Yeah! The Icelandic television show! What’s the name again?
Oh, yea, Hercules!
